Many people who require vision correction prefer the use of contact lenses because it affords them flexibility and convenience. Contact lenses however carry a risk of eye infection through poor hygiene.

The best way to avoid infection is to adhere to the instructions given by your eye care professional. Contact lenses come in various types, however regardless of the type you decide on proper care of the lenses is essential to eye health. They come handy with specialized solutions for washing, cleaning and soaking.

  • Before cleaning or inserting the contact lenses, hands should be thoroughly washed and carefully dried with a clean, lint-free cloth.
  • Minimize contact with water, including removing lenses before swimming or in a hot tub.
  • Do not put contact lens in your mouth to wet them. Saliva is not a sterile solution.
  • During cleaning, rub your contact lens with your fingers then rinse the lenses with solution before soaking them.
  • Rinse the contact lens case with fresh solution and leave empty case open to air dry.
  • Keep contact lens case clean and replace it regularly, at least every three months.
  • Always discard all of the left over contact lens solution. Do not re-use old solution or top-off the solution in your lens case.
  • Always remove contact lens before you instill any eye medication
  • Do not purchase decorative lenses from any non-medical source such as street vendors, beauty supply vendors or on the internet.
  • Wear and replace contact lenses according to schedule prescribed by your eye care professional.
  • Get regular eye checkups. Contact lens wearers should be examined by an eye care provider annually
